1-NBDG, an analogue of 2-NBDG, is a fluorescent glucose analogue used as an indicator to measure glucose uptake in bacteria, live mammalian cells, and tumor biopsies. In *E. coli*, D-glucose competitively inhibits 1-NBDG uptake, while L-glucose or sucrose does not.
